Acer Aspire Timeline 1810TZ 11.6in Ultra-Mobile Laptop

2008 was the year of the netbook; 2009 is the year of “affordable” ultra-mobile laptop. It seems obvious today, but showed netbooks Intel, AMD and other manufacturers that there was a genuine demand for affordable, portable laptops. Netbooks are far from fulfilling this request, but this year has seen a number of products designed to fill this gap. Acer has been at the forefront with its story lines TravelMate and Aspire scenario: notable success being the Aspire 4810T and the TravelMate 8371. His latest effort, the scenario 1810TZ Aspire seeks to raise the bar even higher.

The 1810TZ is as close as we ever came to give a laptop (not included netbooks) a 10/10. Why does not receive such a distinction will be revealed during the review, but suffice it to say that the margins are extremely thin. What is important is that, just like what the Samsung NC10 is a netbook for the 1810TZ distills exactly what an affordable, ultra-mobile laptop should be. Ironically our first point of reference for how to deceive is another Samsung, the X120 has recently reviewed. It’s actually a little unfair to the Samsung. As we said in the magazine, it was not for its battery life of the poor X120 would be a remarkable product, too. We’d love to bet other phones will be more disappointing than the X120, making her only drawback especially irritating. Unsurprisingly it is one of the many things that 1810TZ gets right.

While incorporating the six cell, 5600 mAh capacity battery in 1810TZ means it has not the purity of its lines of Samsung, our tests show the battery life of eight hours and 43 minutes! Under the conditions exactly the same tests of the X120 managed one hours, two miserable 33 minutes – more than three times less. This is a massive difference to estimate person and although you still will not get this amount of life, pushing even the system drive will return great results and you’re much less likely to be caught short. It’s not as if you pay more for the privilege, retail 1810TZ is currently less than 430 pounds – actually less than the Samsung at the time of writing.

Moving to more superficial matters, while the Acer is not as pretty as the X120, this is not an ugly duckling either. It might lack the cohesion and curves a minimalist, but thin frame (22mm at its thinnest, 30mm at its thickest) is still arranged and a few well-placed curves of its own. It’s just that, a bit like the D150 dull Aspire One, Acer uses too much material for contrasting it stand as effective. A choice of colors that include black and blue in addition to our red version, add a nice bit of variety, though. A total weight of 1.4 kg is also very good and no build issues have been evident in our sample of retail, in fact, the quality of plastics and the General Assembly feels rock solid.
