Acer Tempo X960 Windows Mobile Smartphones

The X960 is one of a trio of Windows Mobile smartphones that Acer has set up at the back of his purchase of Glofiish. We were very fond of F900 Acer higher end as it proved to be a viable alternative to the HTC Touch HD, so we were eager to see how the X960 would stack up in comparison.Considering that the F900 is in the high-end range of Acer, the X960 is more mid-range market for smartphones. Looks-wise it’s not exactly what you describe as beautiful. Most smartphones today are designed to be as smooth as possible with smooth, clean continuous lines, but the X960 looks a little old fashioned with chunks bitten here and there.

The chassis also feels a little on the plasticky side though the phone is relatively heavy at 132g, then we do not know how much abuse it will stand up to long term. That said, we like the piano black finish on the front and how the chrome strip runs around the edge of the phone.

The handset also has many difficult tests with a large, circular control on the front that is flanked by two call buttons, a house key and a button dedicated to the integrated GPS functionality. The right edge also houses a power button, camera button, telescopic stylus and a rear spoiler that gives you access to the microSD card slot. The left side, on the other hand, is home to the rocker switch volume, and a programmable button that defaults to start the voice recorder. Unfortunately there is no standard headphone jack. In contrast, the mini USB port on the bottom of the phone is used to connect the headset provided as well as charging the phone via the wall charger and sync with a PC.

When it comes to the screen, the X960 is showing decent. The resistive touch-sensitive screen is bright and has a relatively high resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, but as the screen measures just 2.8in, text, icons and keyboard onscreen rather small and cramped on their default settings for size. The handset is not an accelerometer can not automatically switch from portrait to landscape mode when you turn on the side when using applications such as image viewer or web browser.
