Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera

Since digital cameras were first developed in the 1980s, the sensor resolution has steadily increased each year, and almost every new camera or update an existing model appeared more powerful sensor . However there is a point where simply adding more megapixels ceases to have any real benefit, and in fact may have a negative effect. Cramming more photocells on a small sensor compact camera: the photocells must be smaller and thus less effective in capturing light, especially at low light, leading to a reduced dynamic range and noise settings high ISO.

The camera manufacturers have spent millions on marketing to convince us that means more megapixels a camera better, which makes it a very courageous decision by Canon to reverse the trend and actually reduce the resolution sensor’s flagship compact camera, the new PowerShot G11. The previous model, the PowerShot G10, had a 14.7-megapixel 1/1.7-inch CCD sensor and has been widely criticized for its lower picture quality. Canon has listened to criticism and feedback from users, and for the G11 to the sensor resolution has been reduced to 10.0 million pixels on the same chip size, pixel pitch and increased light sensitivity improved. Canon is obviously hoping that sacrificing image size for better quality pays.

The PowerShot G series has been the flagship line of compact Canon since 2000 and has always been a popular choice among amateur and semi-pro photographers. The G11 shares many characteristics with the G10, including the Zoom 5x image-stabilized f/2.8-f/4.5 Lens (equivalent to 28-140mm). The body design is also very similar to the previous model, with a durable metal and plastic shell, large orders broken up and a handful of comfortable texture. The G11 will never win a beauty contest, but the design has a functional strength that will appeal to the more serious photographer. This is not the kind of camera that will never be available in pink. [via trustedreviews]
