Emtec Movie Cube P800 Media Recorder

Although it offers network and a TV tuner to raise above the original WD TV Media Player, principally because of its lack of format support, we were not too impressed by the Movie Cube Emtec S800. With its focus on digital television and recording on a 2.5-inch platform, the P800 can do a better impression?Emtec refers to the main unit P800 as a docking station, for instead of an optional internal storage, it has a slot at the top designed to keep the included Emtec 2.5 inch hard drive, which limits more options orientation of the unit.

We love the station accueil’s two-tone black-and-white finish, which is more rugged than that found on the S800. Although the white gloss finish that does not pick up fingerprints, and the black portion of the device is substantially matte and textured. On the front is a well integrated set of icons blue backlit to show the power, recording and music playing states.

Connectivity is truly excellent. Outside of external 2.5 inch hard drive slot at its peak, the Movie Cube has a USB port, exceptionally, a memory card reader on the side that accepts SD / SDHC, MMC and MS-Pro. At the rear there is a second USB port, 10/100 Ethernet, HDMI, optical and coaxial digital audio, and composite output, component output, and finally made antenna tuner.

However, all is not rosy. The slot drive with a proprietary connector that works only Gdium Emtec brand of 2.5 “drives (though you can connect to other brands using USB connections at the rear), and HDMI is the version 1.1. Construction quality is also unimpressive, with the flap on the drive slot shows obvious signs of wear after only a few insertions.
