HP Pavilion dm4 Powerful Portable Notebook
Earlier this year, we reviewed the HP Pavilion dm3 and were extremely impressed by what we saw. Yesterday we had our first practice to watch a new model that follows in the same vein, the HP Pavilion DM4. However, while dm3 is based on AMD and an external optical drive, the DM4 will be hitting stores in August with the Intel Core i5 and an integrated optical drive – while maintaining a weight under 2.0 kg.

For us, this seems like a recipe for success, and the design of continuous DM4 heritage began with the excellent dm3. It sports a beautiful thin, thoroughly sculpted chassis is finished in champagne-colored brushed metal inside and outside. HP also added printed patterns similar to those seen on previous HP machines, but seem more elegant engraved in the cold metal.
All this flair design gives the impression of a superior product, but whose prices are likely to start at £ 799 is a bit more affordable than many. It might not be able to negotiate low prices, but certainly good value for a powerful portable laptop.
Speaking of power, the model we saw was using an Intel Core i5 M430 running at 2.26GHz, backed by 3 GB of RAM. Battery life should be around six hours with the standard battery and up to 12 hours with a cell of an extended power option. Models already listed on the HP Web site indicate a 320GB hard drive, but you’ll have to settle for Intel integrated graphics frugal but limited.
One thing we liked dm3 is the overall quality of its construction, which was particularly evident in the keyboard-type isolation. This same keyboard seems to have solved the DM4, which may be a good thing. Our rapid move proved to be as good as has been dm3.
One thing that we are less certain, however, is the touchpad. HP seems to have adopted the “almost” Apple-esque integrated touchpad buttons the first time on envy 15, which were far from being a resounding success. Hopefully he recrossed the questions now: we’ll see. In addition, if HP is going in this direction that we would have preferred to see added most impressive four-point multi-touch, one click Synaptics touchpad which has recently introduced.
