Ivan Poupryev Lumen Physical 3D Display

We already thought about 3D displays, what with the Blu-ray Disc Association HD 3D new specification, but Ivan Poupryev prototype Lumen takes things a step further touch. His concept involves an array of physically moving pixels, each of which can be switched independently and extend out from the screen. As moving, undulating forms, there is also a sensor layer on top which allows pixels to respond to finger.

This means that the 3D controls for example buttons stand proud of the surface can be pressed, and respond to this pressure. Lumen multiple units can be networked and user-entry that appears on the other, or a user can simply put their hand on the surface and feel what is displayed.

Each pixel is actually illuminated from the bottom of the box with the upper surface, in fact, be the protruding end of a light plastic guide tube. These tubes are operated by the slender shape memory alloy (SMA) of the son, which heat up and flex when electricity is applied, pushing the light guide tubes in place.
