Panasonic HDC-TM350 Full HD AVCHD Digital Camcorder

When Canon HF10, HF100 and HF11 camcorders were our favorites in 2008, Panasonic HDC-HS300 and TM300 have dominated the bill in 2009. While Panasonic has heard new things in store for 2010, the company clearly felt a “last hooray” for the existing generation was in order. And so we have the HDC-TM350, an updated edition limited TM300. There are three main differences between the two models.

Firstly, the TM350 has benefited from the ever decreasing cost of flash memory, and now comes with 64 GB instead of 32GB. This means it can store over 8.5 hours of shooting, even at higher quality settings, which will be more than enough for even fairly extended vacation. Records TM350 is anamorphic or Full HD 1440 x 1080 HD, depending on quality mode, and the data rate remains top 17Mbits/sec. Panasonic offers 24Mbits/sec in its AVCHD-based business models, such as AG-HMC151E, but has not brought this down to its consumer line yet. The two other differences from the TM300 are less immediately obvious. The Advanced OIS image stabilization has supposedly been improved so that the active mode is more efficient to overcome the effects of a cameraman walking. Active Mode is a setting additional OIS.

In automatic, you can choose between standard and OIS in active mode, and in the manual, you can either select or turn off the camcorder completely. We found active mode does smooth movement more effective than the basic setting, but it also appeared to slightly reduce the image quality compared to the normal setting when used in situations of displacement, which is probably why Panasonic left the original mode yet available. Panasonic also claims the image processor has been set for low light performance improved slightly. This was not a particular area of inferiority before, however. [via trustedreviews]
