Pioneer BDP-320 Blu-Ray LPCM Media Player

The BDP-320 is the middle man in the last trio of players from Pioneer, sandwiched between the entry-level BDP-120 and High-spec BDP-LX52. Despite being about £ 150 cheaper than the BDP-LX52, BDP-320 offers most of the same characteristics, except for anti-jitter Precision Quartz Lock System – the BDP-320 only supports this for both channels LPCM and not many signals as the LX52.

The biggest surprise on the back panel is the lack of multichannel audio outputs, which may deter those who prefer to feed decode the signals into their analog amplifier of a digital bit stream. But everything else seems in order, with a socket line-up including HDMI v1.3, component, composite and optical digital audio outputs. You also get an Ethernet port to download movie extras and updated firmware from the Internet, a USB port to extend the BD-Live storage capacity beyond the integrated use of 1 GB and a control port for remote installation.

As the LX52, BDP-320 will not handle multimedia content stored on USB keys, which is a disappointment given that most other players are only too happy to plug ‘n play “. Fortunately, in charge of disc formats (using the Home Media Gallery function) is decent enough, with a list that includes AVCHD, DivX, MP3, WMA and JPEG – although not a patch on all players encompassing as the OPPO BDP-831 (RIP) and the LG BD390.

The BDP-320’s audio support is complete, decode all Blu-ray LPCM or output as raw bitstream over HDMI. You also get a wide range of features including the excellent pictures Video Adjust, which allows to adjust the image through 13 different settings and store them in three memory locations, and offers a range of presets for different types of ‘display – Professional, PDP, LCD and projector, and methods adapted to Pioneer PDP, LCD and projectors. The bridge is 48-bit Deep Color ready, supports KURO Link HDMI CEC and 1080p DVD Upscaling. Not a bad trait in the whole series, but it is a shame, Pioneer has not been quicker to embrace a Wi-Fi, making BD Live download much easier than the current wired setup. [via trustedreviews]
