Seagate Ultra Slim HDD SSDs
Right at the time Seagate announced its first SSDs, the company also refers briefly to an Ultra Slim HDD was finalizing. Now here it is. The Seagate ‘Momentus Thin’ (yes it sounds like California slang for an eating disorder) is a 2.5 inch disk drive that measures only 7mm deep. That’s over 25 per cent less than traditional disks of 9.5 mm thick can you see in laptops today.

“The Thin Momentus hard drive promises to help PC makers differentiate the form-factor mobile computing and better compete in the rapidly growing markets for computers and laptops for netbooks,” Seagate’s sales and marketing VP Dave Mosley. But only 2.5mm really make a big difference? In the current battle for Slim it actually does if you consider the most CPU chips are smaller than a fingernail and about the same thickness.
In addition, the range should pack Momentus Thin reasonable performance with a rotation speed 5400 rpm and 8 MB of cache. When the compromise seems to be made is the reduced capacity due to less surface free hard surface. Therefore just 160GB and 250GB versions will be available and will without doubt a significant (if not SSD-esque) premium price. Seagate Momentus range pushes Thin partners in January so expect to see some of the most laptops and netbooks hungry, you’ll see next year. However, long term this factor reduced form into insignificance still pales next to the format proposed DSS MSat.
In related news Western Digital says it has developed a method of formatting hard drives providing up to 11 percent more storage space for an OS clean install. WD dubs the “Advanced Layout ‘and while 11 percent do not seem much when you talk to 2TB disk and in future I doubt many would turn their nose at the extra gigabytes? Mac OS X, Linux, Vista and Windows 7 will support any advanced course format, but special software is required for it to recognize the additional capacity in XP because of its support reduces the file format (read: is ooooold). WD with Advanced Format will start shipping in the coming weeks. [via trustedreviews]
