Sony Ericsson W205 Mobile Phones

Usually, the Sony Ericsson phones me to sit for examination at or near the top of the tree specifications. But this time things are different. I have a Sony Ericsson W205 Vodafone. He is a humble little instrument, just £ 99.99 SIM-free from Sony Ericsson itself, or less if you shop. Vodafone is doing for £ 40 on pay as you go.Of course, the bells and whistles of more expensive handsets are not here and the features that are integrated into lean toward the lower end of the range.

For example, the physical design. It is a slider phone and while it may at first seem to be very similar to the W595 classier and more expensive it is in fact an animal much less showy. The design is Blockier and plastic building material is much more evident. This device feels – and looks – as it is made of materials of lesser quality. This does not mean it is not robust. It certainly feels sturdy enough to withstand some shocks. Just that it lacks panache.

The W205 is a device small enough to 92mm height with the blade down, 47mm wide and 16.4mm thick. It weighs 96g. The height extends up to about 120 mm when the drawer is opened. The sliding mechanism is a little on the clumsy side and the buttons are all a little less well developed than on more expensive machines. Under the slide the keypad is flat and covered with a sheet of clear plastic with a rubbery finish to stop your fingers as you slide about the text. The face buttons are constructed in a similar design and curved round to those of the W595, but they are not as comfortable under the fingers or the ease of release.

None of this is a problem, to be fair, the friendliness is always good. Where I do feel let down is the screen. Sony Ericsson produces some of the best mobile phone screens around, but it is horrible. At only 1.8 inches in size, its 128 x 160 pixels are individually visible. They offer the viewing area so long as the main menu is a grid of 3 x 3 icons. Large black frame of the screen indicates that Sony Ericsson could have found room for a larger screen – but it would have been better specifications and increase the cost handset as a result.
