The rear is also home to four screws which when removed allow the rear of the DS410j be opened, revealing the four drive bays inside. Interestingly, they can accommodate both 3.5 inch and 2.5 inch hard drives, so if you’re feeling really flush you can even use SSD although it would probably be cheaper d ‘hire someone to back up all your data in hand, at 0 and 1, on paper.

This four bay NAS device does not have the compact size of the DS409slim but did Galore features and affordable to go with them. The frame can not be surprisingly small, but at 230mm x 168mm x 184mm is too difficult to impose either. Certainly, the combination of its aluminum casing and white plastic surround looks quite attractive, and the angled front panel allows easy reading of vital statistics systems, such as hard drive status.

Around the back are the power input, Gigabit Ethernet and a pair of USB 2.0 ports. The latter can be used either for connecting a USB storage device (whether to move files or increase the internal capacity), to share a USB printer on your local network for connection to a UPS or even to control a (compatible) USB webcam using DS410j.

As last year proved DiskStation DS409slim, Synology know how the proceeds of a decent NAS device. But just in case you thought this book was a fluke the company has done it again with the DiskStation DS410j. Given its sub-£ 300 price tag, it packs in an array of excellent features and most importantly, ensures superb performance. [via trustedreviews]
